A forgotten man narrates

As soon as he saw me, he asked the dreaded question. "Do you remember me?" I responded with the truth "Yes." He did not stop but went on to ask the dreaded followup question. "In that case, tell me my name." Once again, I decided to say the truth "I remember you but not your name." I thought it was a fair response and he seemed satisfied by it too. He said "Aaaaah! That's what I thought." He went on to say his name. I remembered him. His name pops up regularly in the conversations that I have had with my relatives. At those times, I only remembered his name but not his physical self. When I saw him, I was able to identify that I had seen him a number of times. But, my mind simply did not have the connection between his name and him. So, it ended up embarrassing me. I am never good with names anyway. During the last year of my school teaching career, I spent three months in a class without remembering the name of half of the class. That proved to me that names are overrated.

I have the feeling that people only ask the question "Do you remember me?" when they are sure the other person does not remember the 'me'. One has to be a psycho to remember every person that he or she has met during his or her lifetime. Even if I am a psycho, I am certainly not that kind of psycho. I belong to the other end of the spectrum. I am constantly trying to forget the people whom I don't have to remember. The word networking only brings cables and electronic boxes to my mind, not people.

He liked to talk and so continued talking to no one in particular. Fortunately for me, my two aunts liked listening to his story. Frankly, I enjoyed listening to it too but I could have lived without them. He talked about this and that before landing on a story that involved his wife. Men of that age and possibly every age invariably narrated stories that portrayed their wives in a comic strain. I will now try and reproduce the incident as he narrated it.

My wife was sitting with her cousins and discussing family politics. Suddenly, she lost her conciousness and fell off the chair. I ran towards her and tried calling out her name. Obviously, she did not respond to it. Someone opened a bottle of water and sprinkled some water on her face. That proved effective. Slowly, she opened her eyes and looked at us in confusion. She asked the question that a million heroines have asked "Where am I?" One of her worried cousins responded "You are at Devu's house". She said "Oh!" and closed her eyes again. The person who had sprinkled the water earlier, sprinkled water on her face again. She opened her eyes and said "Stop it! I am alright now. As such there is a water shortage, don't waste water." She attempted to sit up but another cousin stopped her by saying "No! Don't! I have called the ambulance. You should go to the hospital." My wife protested. I joined the protest too but everyone present shushed us. One of them even went on to say "Careful! It might be brain hemorrhage. It might get worse if you move. We have to get you to the hospital by the time the golden hour ends." At first, I wanted to laugh and then I started wondering if it could actually be a hemorrhage. Before she could protest, the ambulance arrived and two persons rushed in with a stretcher. They placed it next to my wife, picked her up and placed her on it. All this happened in a short time and before I realized it, I was sitting inside a speeding ambulance besides my wife who was lying on a stretcher. I tried to talk to the attenders in the ambulance but they seemed too occupied to listen to my words.

At the hospital, my wife was taken to the emergency room. The doctor asked "What happened?" I said "My wife fainted."

"Did she fall?"

"Yes. From a chair."

"Did her head hit the ground?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Did she have lunch?"

"Yes."

"Was there a problem with her speech before she fainted?"

"No. She was talking well with her cousins."

"How was she when she woke up?"

"She was tired."

"Her speech?"

"It was fine. She was about to get up when ..."

"Wait! Let me check her."

The doctor checked her with a few instruments. Soon, he turned to me and said "Looks like her BP went high." She looked at the doctor and me sheepishly and said "I forgot to take the medicine this morning." The doctor looked at her with a grave expression and said "That is not good. You should have your medicines on time. Never forget it." She said "Yes doctor. I alway have it. Only this morning I forgot and then I was standing in the sun at the temple the whole morning. So..." The doctor interrupted her. "You should take care of your health. Health is important." I pitched in by saying "Yes, yes. Health is important." I turned towards the doctor and said "So, can we leave now?" The doctor seemed shocked by my statement. He said "No, no. We have to run some tests. Blood test, MRI and so on. We have to make sure that there are no other issues. At this age, you should be careful. You have to wait." 

I realized that the doctor will not let us out for the next few hours. Worse, I will end up losing a few thousands unnecessarily. I took out my mobile and called our doctor who works in the same hospital. As soon as he picked the call, I informed him about everything that happened during the past two hours. The doctor listened to me patiently and said "Oh! That is all is it? She can go home. You can come back tomorrow and meet me. Give the phone to the duty doctor. I will inform." I gave the phone to the duty doctor who looked at me suspiciously. He explained the incidents that happened from the time my wife arrived at the hospital. For a few minutes after that, he only said "Hmmm", "Ah", "Yes" and "No".  Finally, he gave me back the phone and said "I will prepare the discharge summary. You can leave after that." I smiled and said "Thank you doctor."

Thanks to our doctor, I saved a lot of time and money.

Everyone listening to the narration laughed and nodded in agreement.

A House for Mr Biswas

I bought this book many years back. Everyone in my family read it many years back. They raved about it and are even considering reading it again. But I did not touch it for a long time. I was introduced to V S Naipul many years back. My friend, who was also my house mate, bought the book 'India: A million mutinies now" as a gift for his fiancée. She stayed in Delhi and we lived in Bangalore. So, the book stayed with us for many months. I took the opportunity to read the book. I loved it. The book made me realize that an author could tell a story through a series of essays. When I think back, I wonder if I should have read the book that a guy was planning to gift to his fiancée. Will it not become an used book? But it seems that neither I nor he belonged to the romantic type. So both of us did not care. Many months later, he gifted the book to his fiancée. A few days later, she asked him for whom he had bought the book. Though unromantic by nature, he was sensible enough to realize that the question was a loaded one. Instead if responding to the question he asked "What do you mean?" She said "You bought the book for yourself, isn't it?" He said "No. I bought it for you." She said "What makes you think I read such books?" The poor girl had no interest in essays on lives of families spread across India. For that she thought she could read a newspaper. I think on that day she realized that she probably would not receive roses and gifts on Valentine's day.

Getting back to Naipul

After buying "The House of Mr.Biswas", I bought a few other books by V S Naipul. I read a couple of those books too but not this one. In meanwhile, I got to know that the book was not a happy one. Maybe that added to my lack of interest in reading it. Finally, one day a few months back, I started reading the book. The book is long and it took me many months to finish. The book is not a happy one. Though the book is a satire, at most times, I felt miserable reading it. Mr. Biswas is a miserable character. It was tough for me to not empathize with the protagonist of the book. The guy is a selfish cowardly brute. The story is recounted from his point of view and so he justifies everything he does and criticizes everyone else's actions. The issue is that when I read a book, I always become a part of the story. Unfortunately, in this case not only did I feel I was a part of the book but I also felt that I am Mr. Biswas. I did not like that. 

All this would make one feel that I hated reading the book. Nope! The book is brilliant. I don't think I have read anything like this. Its vivid and descriptive. The problem arises due to the fact that it is so well written that I was not able to differentiate reality from fiction while I read the book. It gave me a clear picture of Port of Spain, Hanuman house, the house on Sikkim street and all the locations that formed a part of the story. The picture might not be anything like how the author envisioned it but I don't care. If a movie is made on this book, I should not watch it as I don't think it will live upto the picture I have inside my head. This book proves that an author can get into the reader's head if he/she wants to. Scary!

I started writing this post, when I read a part of the book that deal with a deaths that occurs in one of the houses that Mr. Biswas stays in. The writing is hilarious. It shows, the contempt that Mr. Biswas holds for the other characters and is a general commentary on how people deal with death. Given below are the lines from the book.  

Then, in quick succession, a number of deaths occurred.

Sharma, son in law, who collected oranges and drove the children to school, slipped off a mossy orange branch one rainy morning and broke his neck. He died almost at once. The children did not go to school that day. Sharma’s widow tried to turn the holiday into a day of mourning. She sobbed and wailed and embraced everyone who went near her and asked for messages to be sent. Messages was sent and Sharma's relations turned up in the afternoon, non-descript people, not able, even in their sorrow, to drown the shyness. They put Sharma in a plain coffin and carried him to the graveyard, where the village had assembled to see the Hindu rites. Hari, in white jacket and beads, whined over the grave and sprinkled water over it with a mango leaf.

‘Same thing he did to my house’ said Biswas to Anand. (I found this line hilarious. Mr. Biswas moves into a small shack that he considers to be his. His wife and her family insists that Hari should conduct a pooja. Mr. Biswas does not like Hari and stands against this proposal. But they win and the pooja is conducted the same manner as the one he conducted for Sharma's death. A few days after the pooja Mr.Biswas had to give up the house and move away.) 

Sharma’s widow shrieked, fainted, revived, and tried to fling herself into the grave. The villagers watched with interest. Some of the knowing whispered about sutee.

Movie - November 2023

November 2023: 11 Movies and series

1. Shutter Island: This movie appears on many lists of the greatest psychological thriller movies. I have been considereing watching it for a long time. Finally, I did when I was reminded that this is a Scorsese - DiCaprio movie. A good thriller. It starts off at one place and twists into another place by the end. I did not guess the twist for a long time. At one point, the twist started appearing but I was not sure about it. The twist was an uncomfortable one and I wished it was not true. But by the end it was clear that it was true and I felt terribly unhappy. A great movie. I will not watch it again.
2. Master: I don't like Vijay, the actor. Most, if not all, his movies have two big problems - his dialogue delivery and his acting. This effectively means, I should avoid watching his movies and to a great extent, I have been successful at avoiding them. 'Beast' was the first Vijay movie that I have seen in the theaters and though I had a good laugh, it was not a good movie. I have never felt the desire to see that movie again though I laughed at its silliness as I watched it. Of course, Vijay hammed through the role like he usually does. For these reasons, I gave Master a miss when it was released. I am not a big fan to Vijay Sethupati either (could it be that I have a block against the name 'Vijay'). I did not see the movie when it was released on OTT either. But I suddenly felt the urge to watch the movie. I liked the movie. Both the Vijays were not annoying and the story was interesting. I did not end up with a feeling that I should have watched the movie earlier - it was not that good. Will not disappoint one's so-what-should-I-watch-on-Prime-now urge.
3. Loki (season 2): The first part of Loki was excellent and it ended at a point that ensured that I would watch the second season. I did and I loved it. Its complex and great to watch. Tom Hiddleston is fantastic. When compared to season one this season is a lot more serious. I missed the funny part of season 1 but the makers maintained the tension well and I was engrossed in the proceedings. The end of the season seemed like the end of the series itself but one never knows. The internet is filled with speculation on how the ending of the series would affect the MCU but I don't think it would affect much. The makers of the MCU movies and series will make adjustments to their stories to fit the end of Loki season 2 into it. The conviction of Jonathan Majors, makes the continuation of Kang as a villain complex but I am sure MCU will work with that too. Ultimately, nothing really matter, its all a story after all and stories can be taken wherever the story teller desires to take it.
4. Upload (season 3): I loved Upload season 1. Sometime back I got the idea that human beings can live forever if human thought can be transferred out of a brain into a computer. This series is based on this idea and I was thrilled to see the idea being reproduced well on screen. The first season of the series was really good. The second one was good. The romance between the lead characters, reached a crescendo at the end of the second season. Thus, most of the third season focussed on the relation between these two characters and this made the series miserable. Three months have passed since I watched this season of Upload and I don't remember much about it. It was not interesting but I watched it anyway. Did not want to leave the story hanging. I think I will try and watch the next season too but if its like the current one then I would have no choice but drop it in the middle.
5. Deadpool 1: I have been thinking of watching this movie for a long time. Many people have raved about it but I somehow did not want to watch it. On watching the movie, I realized why. The reason was that I was sure I will not like the movie and sure enough, on watching it I realized I did not like this movie. It cool, sarcastic, funny, different from anything I have seen and all but I did not like this movie. It did not keep me occupied. The only scene I remember is Deadpool killing Ryan Reynold as he read the script of 'Green Lantern'. That scene was funny. I laughed, rewound, watched again and laughed again. I guess that scene alone makes this movieworth watching. 
6. Deadpool 2: Deadpool 1 was interesting and had some good jokes. It should have been a good movie but I did not like it. But to complete the deadpool scene I watched the second part. It been two months since I have seen this movie and I don't remember much of the movie. There is someone who comes from the future and tries to stop someone who ... Oh! How does it matter! This is a generic entertainer that does not deserve all the hype it receives. But I will watch Deadpool 3 when it is released. I guess it's due to FOMO.
7. Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 2: I had seen some parts of this movie many months back but I had dropped off in the middle as there were too many things happening in life and movies were the last thing in my mind. Then I heard that the third part of the movie is really good. I missed watching it in theatres. But I had a chance to watch in the Disney + Hotstar. So I decided to watch that movie but I could not do so without watching the second part. So I watched this. Its a decent movie at best. It is not as interesting at the first or third part. As in third part this gives the backstory of one of the characters but this one is not as interesting as the one in the third part. So its ok-ok. 
8. Guardians of Galaxy Vol. 3: I am not a big fan of the MCU though I have watched many movies of that universe. But Guardian of Galaxy series in one of the best in that universe. Chris Pratt is funny and cool. Zoe Saldaña plays the no nonsense role well. The Racoon, Groot and other big fellow are funny. The part 1 of the series was really good and the songs in the movie are great too. Bringing back the songs of 80s and 90s and making it an integral part of the movie pushed the movie up a notch or two. The third part of the series, is better than the second and is almost as good as the first. The serious back story of one of the characters that runs through the movie gives some heavy material to the movie. It is a good movie to watch, though I don't believe I will watch the movie again (even on OTT).
9. Napolean: At some time in the past, I heard that Ridley Scott is making a movie on Napolean and that Joaquin Phoenix is playing the role of Napolean. I had decided then that I would see the movie in the theatre. Soon the happenings in my life, pushed the movie off my head. I saw its trailer during the screening of "Killers of the Flower Moon". Soon after the movie was released, I watched it, at IMAX. I was warned the movie was disgusting by a friend, but it did not matter. I would have liked the movie if it was another hour longer. Ridley Scott mocked Scorsese about the length of his movie, but I think his own movie suffered due to it being shorter than required. The IMAX experience did not make much of an impression on me. I guess I was engrossed in the movie and the largeness of the screen was forgotten as I watched it.
10. Paatal Lok (season 1): I had heard about this series for long, but did not bother to watch. But after Dahaad I ran out of hindi series that seemed interesting. That's when I remembered about this series and how people raved about it. For some reason, I thought that series was of mythological nature - I mean, involving humans and shaitans in some manner. But the reference to paatal is metaphorical. I was a trifle disappointed but unnecessarily actually. Great series. Kept me at the edge of my seat. It started with a lot of curse words and brutality but as the season proceeded, it started focusing on the story at hand. That does not mean it is not dirty and brutal, its just that it dirtiness and brutality seemed relevant to the story. I loved the fact that the series is about a crime that is foiled. It is a search for the intention. In that sense it is not the thriller where we are looking forward to find the person responsible for the crime. I did not care about the intention behind the crime. All that I was interested in was the way the series was laid out. Of course, the brilliant cast helped in making the series interesting to watch.
11. Wakanda Forever: What a terrible movie! A lot of sentiments that did not affect me at all. Too many cliches. Also, the end credit scenes completely messed the movie. Anyway, I don't have much else to say. The only thing I liked about the movie is the kadi joke based on the movie title that I heard a few months back - If Black Panther sits down, he will never get up, Why? Because okkandha forever.

Movies - January 2024

January 2024 - 14 movies and series

1. Neymar: Someone told me that this is a fun movie to watch. I had seen another movie, Jo and Jo, in which the two boys who played the leads in this movie have acted and I liked that movie. So I decided to watch this movie. I should add that the two "boys" are no longer "boys". The movie has a dog at its centre and the expressions of the dog have been captured well. The dog is a rock star. The first half of the movie is fun but the second half is filled with cliché and I ended up forwarding some of the edge of the seat moments in the movie. A decent one time watch movie.
2. Shatranj ke Khiladi: I saw a reel in which an actor playing Satyajit Ray receives a phone call from a student of film making from New York. The student says that he had watched the Apu series recently and was inspired by it. At the end of the call he introduces himself as Martin Scorsese. I felt impressed. I wondered if its true and searched for it on Google. I found a YouTube video that had Scorsese talking about Satyajit Ray. He was introducing the screening of Ray's Bollywood movie "Shatranj ke Khiladi". In the talk, he mentioned that he was inspired by the Apu series. As I was watching the video I realized that I had not seen a Ray movie for many years (decades?) now. I have seen "Shatranj ke Khiladi" but I think at that time I considered it a boring art movie and don't remember enjoying it. A few years later, I watched "Pather Panchali" and loved it. Since then I have seen a few other movies by Ray but don't remember many. So I decided to search for "Shatranj ke Khiladi" on YouTube. I found it and watched it. I liked the movie. Sanjeev Kumar and Saeed Jafferi are so good that they keep our minds off the the serious theme of the movie. I also liked Amjad Khan as the king. Usually, I like to watch a movie at its face value and not look for layers. It just makes the movie watching process too intellectual and responsible. Since this is a movie by Satyajit Ray I am sure there are underlying layers. The only one I could find was that the common people are not really bothered with the politics of Governance. They just want to live their lives. Anyway, I think I will watch a few other Ray movies in the future.
3. The Missouri Breaks: Marlon Brando's Napolean in "Désirée" stoked my curiosity towards the actor. I wanted to watch a few of his movies, especially his earlier movies. I had seen him in "Godfather" and "Superman" but the movies by themselves formed a greater impression on me than the actor itself. So I searched Prime Video and found this movie. The movie stars Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson. On paper, it seemed like a treat but the reviewers at the time of the release of the movie, 1976, did not like the movie. But since then the movie seemed to have become a sort of cult favourite, also IMDB gave a rating above 7. So I watched it. The movie is interesting, I liked watching it. Interestingly, Marlon Brando play a role that I usually associated with Jack Nicholson, at least in 80s and 90s. Nicholson has a straight forward role, with a slight negative shade. Marlon Brando was just annoyingly superb in the movie. He reminded me of many characters played by Joaquin Phoenix. Could he have been inspired by Brando? Prime Video has the good feature of providing information and trivia about the movie being watched; for many movies and not for all. Many a times, I pause the movie to read the trivia. In this movie, it is said that Brando improvised so much that the Director gave up and let him do what he wants. This is a good movie to watch. Once again the ending is clichéd as hell but that's ok.
4. Ronin: I had kept this movie in my watchlist for long. It has Robert De Niro and received  good reviews. Apparently, the car chases through Nice, in the movie, are good. The director John Frankenheimer was a famous director though I don't think I have seen any movie of his other than 'The Manchurain Candidate'. Unfortunately, I movie did not interest me. I don't think the movie has aged well. The chases might have been interesting in 1998 but I found it difficult to not press the forward button. During the climax, I had to press the forward button. The climax had twists and surprises for sure but by then I had lost interest in the movie. Till the end I had no idea who the villain of the movie was and when I found out in the end, I did not care. There are few interesting scenes but other than that I did not find anything interesting about the movie. 
5. You were never really here: Many lists that I have seen in the recent months have this movie as a must watch movie. I started watching this movie but the beginning of the movie itself seemed disturbing. So I stopped it and started watching the series "The Boys". Next day, afternoon, I packed lunch to the office, bread and egg, and decided to have it at my desk itself. I started watching the movie while having my lunch. The movie is terribly disturbing but it is taken beautifully. The cinematography and editing is good. The background music defines the movie. It sets the mood for every scene beautifully. As usual, Joaquin Phoenix is good and carries the movie on his shoulder. The movie does not have many dialogues and yet conveys its message effectively. I would not like to watch this movie again.
6. The Boys (Season 1): I have heard a lot about this series and even attempted to watch it once. But it seemed too gory and sexual. I watched two parts and dropped it. In recent times, I felt the urge to watch movies that I have not heard of or have heard about in distant past. The search led me to some interesting movies. 'You ere never really here' was one such movie. Now I am tired of the search and also, most of these movies are of disturbing nature. Not many well made comedies are available. So I decided to watch a series as that will at least keep me off the search for a few weeks. I picked 'The Boys' as I thought it was some super hero nonsense and yet it had a high rating in IMDB. The series has completed three seasons and the fourth one is round the corner. So I thought it will keep me occupied me for sometime. Unfortunately, the series turned out to be as disturbing as some of the movies I had seen. The basic premise of the series seems simple but as it proceeds the complexity increases and more characters came in. Season 1 ends at an interesting and frustrating point. Fortunately, I did not have to wait for long to watch the second season as it was readily available. The sex and violence is quite disturbing and so I cannot recommend this series for anyone though the theme perse is good and quite relevant to today's world.
7. The Boys (Season 2): The basic premise of the first season gets taken care of in the first few episodes of this season. The theme broadens and takes a serious tone in the second season. It continues to be bloody, sweaty and juicy. But in a way it talks about today's polarized world and how easy it is for leaders to use people's beliefs to swerve them off the path of fairness and justice. This series is a good black comedy-drama. Sadly, it is not accessible for many people. I will continue to go through the series till it ends. As I write this, I am watching the first episode of season 3 and I feel tired of it. I have parked it the whole day and am tempted to watch something else. But I think I will go back to it tomorrow and finish the series in the next four or five days. Then I will wait a few months for season 4 to come out.   
   
   Thaikudam Bridge concert: This is not the eighth entry as this is not a movie. But it is worth a mention here. Oh! More than worth a mention. There was some mess ups and heartaches about a Thaikudam Bridge concert that happened a few months back. It stayed with me for the past few months. So when Facebook informed me that the Thaikudam Bridge are playing in Bangalore on a day when I was in that city, I decided to book the ticket. Book my show showed that the tickets started at Rs. 999 but by the time I booked, the cheapest tickets available costed over 2000 bucks a seat. But we had to attend this concert and so I booked the ticket. The only issue was that it was in a hall, I had already seen them a few years back at Music Academy in Chennai. Though the band played well, the concert was not fun. I also attended a John McLaughlin concert a few years later (or earlier) at the same hall and that was not fun either. So I hoped the issue was with the hall and not the group itself. Maybe that hall was made for sa-sa-sa-ri-ri kind of concerts. 
   
   On the day of the concert, we arrived at the hall on time. As expected, malayalam seemed the national language of the hall. Our seats were somewhere in the middle of the hall. The hall itself was packed. Just after 7 pm, an MC started talking. He talked nonsense; not worth remembering or repeating here. At 7:20 pm, the stage darkened and the band walked in. They set themselves up. Soon the LED screen behind lighted up and the band started playing the song Navarasam. The song by itself is superlative but when it combined with the LED screen, the experience was mind blowing. It was a great, great, great concert. At the end of it, I walked out feeling sad that it had come to an end. The next day at 7:30 pm I looked at my watch and thought, yesterday we were watching the concert at this time. My young concert mate, started searching the web for the next Thaikudam Bridge concert. I am so fortunate to have attended the concert and I will see them again if they come anywhere close to Chennai or Bangalore (Not true! They are playing at Mahabalipuram this weekend and I have no plans to attend the concert. It is not a concert but a part of some two day programme and I don't have the patience to go through two days of programmes).
     
8. Captain Miller: I checked my mobile as soon as I woke up. He had sent a message the previous night, It read "...tomorrow some guys are gonna watch thenew Dhanush movie in Balaji theatre at 4. Can I go or stay for family time?" I got all choked up feeling the affection the boy had for his family. I asked his mother "His friends are going for Captain Miller and he wants to go too?" She responded "Let him go. He will get bored otherwise." I typed back "go ahead". Late that evening, he came back from the theatre after watching Captain Miller. He said it was interesting and that he enjoyed watching the movie. I had seen the trailer and it seemed interesting but I don't really like Dhanush. I realize half the world thinks he is the best thing to happen to Tamil cinema after Kamalahassan but I don't like his acting much. I mean, it is not the acting, I don't like his dialogue delivery. It seems too kiddish. So I don't like to spend money to watch a Dhanush movie. So though the name 'Captain Miller' and the trailer intrigued me, I did not plan to watch the movie. But he said the movie's good and so I decided to watch it.
   
   The show started fifteen minutes late. That was annoying. I liked the movie. It is a good masala movie. Mindless and lot of action. The action sequence prior to the interval was terriffic. But the second half was a bummer. It was not bad but it was not interesting either. A movie becomes terrific when one feel one is a part of the movie and when one feels one's life depended on the action of the characters in ṭhe movie. In this case, I felt I was a part of the audience watching the action of characters on a screen. That can be entertaining at the best. That is what I felt in the second half. Dhanush was ok. I was not annoyed by his dialogue delivery in this movie but his laugh is annoying. It reminded me of the bubble in comic books with the word 'ha ha ha' written in it. The laugh of a person, who does not want to hurt the person who is trying to tickle him/her. Anyway, not a bad movie to watch, but it has to be watched in the theatre. I don't think I will like the movie, if I watch it on OTT.
9. The Boys (Season 3): The Boys marathon continues. I had to end this crap and move on. I don't mean that the show is crap. Its good but the amount of graphic violence and sex just makes it unbearable. If one takes off the super hero part then one can map the happenings on the screen to what's happening around us. The super heros on the screen can be mapped on to politician and industrialists in life. The manipulation of the common people by the politicians and media is the same as what's shown in the series. Also, I liked the emotional side of the super heros shown in the series. They are not shown strong and perfect. They are unsure and constantly in search of love and adoration. This being a series, it gets all the time it requires to develop the different aspects of many of the characters and that's fun. I miss the Billy Joel songs in this season and maybe the previous one too. In the first part had many of his songs but the character who listens to Billy Joel has changed and also many other characters have walked in. So the number of songs by the artist has gone down. That said, the soundtrack of the series is good. Overall this season was more complex than the previous two and it ends in a complicated place. This should ensure that the audience will end up watching the fourth season. It is a fun series to watch but I definitely will not recommend it to anyone.
10. Gen-V: This is an off shoot of the series "The Boys". Its about an university for the super heroes. It seems like a coming to age movie that got contaminated due to the interference of the directors of "The Boys". This one too has plenty of gore and sex. Plenty of exploding heads, exploding bodies, slashed arms, plucked out brains and ... Bloody hell, the list goes on. I don't think I enjoyed it much. Just went through it so that I can be done with it. The final three scenes are quite interesting. It seems to be placed there for people to come back and watch season 2. I am not looking forward to it but think will end up seeing it anyway. The only interesting thought that I got while watching the series is that whenever a group of people come together to form an organization, there is injustice being done to people inside and/or the organization. Organizations are driven by a value system that a new entrant might not agree with and this causes many issues for the new entrant. But one does not have to watch the series to understand this, just go to your office/college/school. 
11. The Night Manager: I started watching this series as Tom Hiddleston is the protagonist of this series. He did not make much of an impression on me in the Avenger or Thor series, where I thought he was projected as a loser. But he is fantastic in the Loki series. In the first part he is funny and in the second one he is serious. He carried the series very well. Also, he has a terrific voice. In this series, he looks terrific. Another reason to watch this series, was that it is based on a book by John Le Carre. I have only read one of his book and don't remember much about it. But I remember his books as serious spy thrillers. This series also fits into that category. Not many scenes of violence but the series is envoloped with a constant feeling of violence and tension. Tom Hiddleston is great. So are the other actors, all of whom I have seen in other movies and series. The series is produced by BBC and the class is seen through the series. It had only 6 episode and so I was able to finish it in a couple of days.

12. Blood Diamond: I loved this movie. I have been wanting to see it for a long time but kept pushing it. Finally! Di Caprio is amazing and so is everyone else. A tough movie to watch. I have heard about the civil war in African countries but the movie shows how brutal it is. I can't even imagine living through this after seeing the movies. Of course, the bloodiness of the diamonds that people buy also comes out well in the movie. I have seen a few DiCaprio movies but the performances in this one and 'The Killing of the flower moon' are the ones that I will never forget. 
13. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One: This is the seventh part of the Mission Impossible series and I find it ridiculous that I am watching it. But what's worse is that I enjoyed watching it. For me, any series in movies represents a lack of imagination. I think the people involved in the making of such movie like to be creative within a limited framework. They don't have to spend time on the character development, at least for the older characters and the basic premise of the story is already setup. That said, I think it is ok to make a series of movies with three or four parts, like 'Back to the future'. But I think making a series with seven or eight parts, like Fast and the Furious, is ridiculous. However, the Mission Impossible series is different. The series seems to be getting better with each movie. I did not find the early movies to be interesting, but I have liked the last three or four movies and this one is the best. The theme is terrific; it brings AI into it very well. The incidents are quite complex. Funnily, the action sequences in the climax bored me. I don't understand why there is a fight on top of the train. This has been done in millions of movies across many decades. I found the whole train sequence in the climax boring. If they had not had those sequences then the movie would have been two and a half hours long, which is good enough. In the recent past, I have started liking Tom Cruise movies. They are nothing more than entertainment and that's all I demand from movies on many occasions. The only issue is that Tom Cruise is alway Tom Cruise. For example, I find no difference between Ethan Hunt and Reacher. They are both Tom Cruise, simple. Ethan Hunt and Reacher are good characters not because of Tom Cruise playing those roles - Ethan Hunt and Reacher are good Tom Cruises. This would be seen as a limitation in the case of other actors but Tom Cruise chooses his movies well and he is so involved in the movie making that he ensures that it is fun to watch. I will definitely watch the second part of this movie in the theater.
14. Antony: The poster of this movie did not seem interesting and so I avoided watching this movie for sometime. At times, I was tempted to watch this movie as it has Joju George in it but then I remembered 'Porinju Mariam Jose' and hesitated. That movie started well but became a mess as it went along. I don't remember much about the movie, but Joju was good in that movie, I think and the person who acted in the Mariam character left a good impression too. But over the past few weeks, I kept hearing that this movie, Antony, is good and that it performed well in box office. So I decided to watch it. The beginning seemed promising but my spirits dropped when I saw the name of the director. Joshiy was a happening director in the 1980s but for some reason I don't think his movies in this century are of the same quality. I wondered if I should stop watching the movie but then I realized that I have never run away from a bad movie. (Not true, I have done it thrice - Saajan: I was actually enjoyed watching the first half of the movie but my friend, a movie buff, felt the movie was rotten and I did not have the guts to disagree with him. The second Kaadal Desam - even A R Rahman's music could not save the movie; we thought it was better to go home in the rain rather than watch the second half of the movie. Kadhalan - What a rotten movie! Once again A R Rahman's music sounded terrible when heard in the movie.) Besides, the movie had begun reasonably well. The first half of the movie went well. Joju was good, Nyla Usha effused energy in the few scenes she appeared. Kalyani seemed spunky. Her kick boxing seemed convincing. But then the movie turned sentimental and Kalyani stopped being impressive and Nyla disappeared. Joju continued to be effective though. The climax thankfully was short and to the point but the last scene was cheesy. On the whole, I am glad I watched the movie as it increased the movie count for January to 14. I am superstitious and want to avoid the number 13 as I believe the month I stop with 13 movies will be the last month I watch a movie for that year; not life, only year. After watching the movie I realized that the 'Porinju Mariam Jose' was directed by Joshiy and Nyla, Chemban and Joju played the titular characters in the movie. If I had known that information earlier, I would not have watched this movie.

Movies - December 2023

A major change took place in my life in August 2023. This resulted in my having a lot more time at hand than earlier. I had work but I could do the work while playing a movie on my laptop. Lovers of cinema might think this is not the best way to watch a movie but I don't watch a movie to be a lover of cinema. I watch movies because I like watching them and for the few hours that I am watching them I am taken away from my life to another world. So I grabbed the opportunity and let the movies run. In August I watched 26 movies but since then the numbers have reduced but the numbers are still decent. I watched most movies on OTT but a few in theatres too. I watched most of these movies alone. 

After watching a few movies, I decided that it will be important for me to keep track of these movies. So I started noting them in a draft blog entry. A few weeks later, I decided I should write something against each movie. Not really a review but the reason for me to choose the movie and my experience while watching the movie. I started it in December and am now travelling backwards to catch up while I continue to watch movies. I think the catching up will take time and also, the list is getting long. So I decided to publish the list of movies month by month.

I am done with December. So this becomes the first month to get published. I hope to go back and complete the previous months in January itself.

December 2023 - 14 movies and series

1. The Family Man (season 2): I enjoyed watching the first season of The Family Man. I enjoy watching Manoj Bajpayee. I think this role fits him well. I liked the not so pleasant ending of the first season. So I waited eagerly for season 2. But season 2 got immersed in controversy about the reference to the Eelam movement in Sri Lanka. There was also some controversy about Samantha who played a Tamil terrorist in the series. So I decided to keep away from this season. But at the beginning of December I reached a phase where I was not sure what I should watch. So I watched the second season of The Family Man and I am glad I watched it. It is quite tight and Samantha is good. As in series one, there is a good balance of thrill and family moments. The icing on the cake is Manoj Bajpayee though. 
2. Eternals: I loved this movie. Why the hell was this movie thrashed and trashed? The story is interesting and gripping. The casting was a trifle annoying, especially Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie (I never thought I will say that in my life). But as I said the story is quite gripping.
3. Black Widow: I did not expect to like this movie. I am not sure why. In the Avengers world, Black widow gets sidelined by Iron man, Thor and Captain America (among others). So I did not believe this to be a strong character. Also, the fact that Black Widows dies in Endgame reduced my interest in the movie. But the movie proved me wrong. It was good. It has almost all the required elements for a hollywood masala (almost as there is no romance). Much better than the sentimental nonsense called Endgame and Wakanda Forever.
4. Indian Jones and Dial of Destiny: The movie did not deserve to flop. That does not mean it is a good movie.  It looks like a poor man's 'Raider's of the lost ark'. The climax is quite nonsensical. Shockingly, I found Phoebe Waller-Bridge annoying; she just does not fit the role. I think Indiana Jones does miss Steven Speilberg.   
5. Get out: Amazing movie. Dark and uncomfortable. 30 minutes into the movie, I had to take a break and I could only go back to the movie 24 hours later. After that I was not able to stop watching it. Eerie and edge of the seat movie. I think the movie has many layers but for me it was just great to watch it with the most obvious two layers.
6. John Carter: I have no idea what to make of the movie. I thought I did not like it but I could not help it though. Apparently, it is based on the book written in 1912 by Edgar Rice Burrogh (the one who wrote Tarzon) "A Princess of Mars". Ultimately, it is a dumb entertainer. One that I would not recommend to anyone who thinks Govinda movies are crap.
7. Romancham: What a brilliant movie! Midly spooky and terribly funny. Just maintains an uncomfortable feeling through the movie and does not make it scary except in a couple of places. The scene involving Chemban Vinod is funny. The conversation between Jesus and Krishna is outstanding and I was disappointed when it ended abruptly. Its interesting to note that I was planning to write something along those lines a few months back. But the realization that most Indian writers' writings are based on mythology made me stop, at least for now. Getting back: Arjun Ashokan is brilliant in the movie. I am glad I watched but wonder why I did not see it earlier. 
8. The Killing: The movie is directed by Stanley Kubrick - the only reason I started watching it. It is a short one hour and twenty minute movie. The movie is a documentary with a narrator in the background. It recounts the incident of a day or two and it is done so with timings. I found the movie interesting with the last fifteen minutes absolutely engrossing. The ending of the movie stands out.
9. Old Boy: This is considered to be a cult favorite. It appears in many lists of movies not to be missed. Every time I surfed for a movie on Amazon, it appeared. Finally, I decided to watch it. Did I like it? I don't know. It is very different from anything that I have watched. It touched a raw nerve and made me feel disgusted at times. But I am glad I watched the movie. 
10. Manchurian Candidate: Another Kubrick movie. Nope, this is not a Kubrick movie. About a month later, I was reading about the movie named Ronin, when I realized the director of Ronin is also the director The Manchurian Candidate, John Frankenheimer. Prime video suggested it when I finished watching "The Killing". I have heard this term earlier and had a vague idea what it meant. The phrase itself took birth due to the movie and the movie is based on a book. This link has details about the phrase, movie and the book. Good movie. Kept me at the edge of my seat. I don't think I have ever seen a Sinatra movie. I only remember him as a singer but he is good in this movie. Another good movie watched.
11. A Fistfull of Dollars: I love Sergio Leone - Ennio Morricone - Clint Eastwood movies. That said, I have only watched "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" and maybe a "For a Few Dollars More". But the former is such a good movie that I have watched it many times. The pace of the movie, the cinematography and the music are fantastic. Sergio Leone's use of close up shots (especially the eye) and the sections of silence make his movies interesting to watch. This movie too has all the trademarks of the Sergio Leone movie. But being one of his earlier western its seems a little raw. "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" seems extremely refined in comparison. Next movie: "For a Few Dollors More".
12. Désirée: I knew she was interested in Literature, History and Movies. So I mentioned to her that I saw "Napolean". She immediately asked  if the movie has anything about Napolean's first lover, Désirée. The movie did not mention her. She said that she had read a book about Désirée when she was young and that this person was Napolean's first fiancée. I got curious and searched the Internet. I found that there was a book and a movie about Désirée . Interestingly, the movie had Marlon Brando as Napolean and the review claimed that he was brilliant. I agree with the reviewers. Brando seems like a textbook Napolean. As in the case of the movie 'Napolean', this movie too should have been longer but it is quite informative. A few lines on what I learnt. Désirée ultimately married a Marshall of France by the name of Bernodatte. He was adopted by the queen of Sweden and ruled Sweden for a few years. The dynasty that he started with him continues to rule Sweden even now. This means that Désirée was the first queen of this dynasty. She was not just a lover and fiancée of Napolean.
13. For a few Dollars More: This one is better than 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The story line is more developed compared to the other movie. The presence of Lee Van Cleef and his character too helps the movie. The villain from the previous movie is repeated here. I somehow felt Gabbar Singh of Sholay is based on the villain character, Indio, from this movie. The Spaghetti westerns are always a great watch. Maybe I will watch it again in a few years. I will not complete the trilogy by watching "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" again. Too many movies to watch, no point indulging in watching movie that I have already watched and remember too.
14. Of Mice and Men: Many years back, I read the Steinbeck's book "East of Eden". The book is set in depression era and is terribly depressing. But I loved the book. I don't remember much about the book but I remember still that it is a good book and I enjoyed reading it. I saw the movie too but I remember even less of the movie. Since reading 'East of Eden', I have wanted to read another Steinbeck book but for some reason I never did. "Of Mice and Men" is one such book. So when I saw the title in Prime Video, I checked the IMDB rating, it was above 7. I started watching the movie. One of the lead actors seemed familiar. His name's Gary Sinise and he acted as Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump. The other lead of the movie is John Malkovich. I loved the movie. It is a sad tale but it is made so beautifully that I did not feel sad watching it. Very few sad movie have made me feel this calm. I wish I could ask someone to watch it but not many people I know care for movies as much as I do and the ones who care would already have watched this movie. So I write it here.

The End

The day of the party

That morning, he decided to go for a walk around his complex. The morning was bright and yet cool. He had slept well the previous and he looked at the world pleasantly. He got out of the building and almost immediately noticed the group of monkeys sitting on the parapet walls of the first floor balconies. One of the older monkeys was sipping from a bottle of Limca. The first floor balconies were longer than the ones on the other floor and provided a lot more space for the monkeys to play around. Some of the residents of the first floor covered the whole balcony with net. The younger monkeys frolicked on them like children on trampolines. Somedays, the monkeys were fortunate enough to find an open window in one of the apartments. They took advantage of the situation by raiding the kitchen for food. That morning was one such fortunate morning. The monkeys started the morning with the bottle of Limca. Next, he saw one of them trying to rip open an unopened cover of maida. A little later, he saw the floor beneath littered with the packet of maida, an empty and torn tetra pack of cream, an empty case of eggs and other food items. He looked at the monkeys and littered ground worriedly. He hoped he had closed all the windows in his apartment.

He noticed the truck when it was a few metres from his car. The path was narrow but there was enough space for the truck and the car to cross each other comfortably. As the truck came closer, he noticed the name written on top of the truck. It had two words; the first was 'THE' and the second 'MALATHA'. He felt stumped. He did not understand what Malatha stood for. He had never heard the word and it did not seem like a name. So why had the owner of the truck written 'THE MALATHA' on the truck. He looked at the truck again and immediately realized the error that he had committed; there was no 'T'. The name of the truck was "HEMALATHA".

It happened to him again. He saw a set of labourers walking on the side of the road. One of them was wearing a sports t-shirt with his name and number written on its back. The name had two parts. The second one was 'RAM' and the first one was 'RUN'. He felt stumped, again. Run did not seem like a name. Could it mean that he is a runner and that "RUN RAM" probably meant Ram who is taking part in the running competition. By this time, his car had gone much ahead and he could no longer see the person. He thought the name would remain a mystery. At that point, he remembered a detail that he had noted earlier. The t-shirt had  a fold just before the 'R' of 'RUN'. That meant that there could have been a letter that was hidden in the fold. He thought for a moment and realized the letter ahead of the 'R' must be 'A'. The name of the t-shirt must be 'ARUN RAM'

As he walked down the corridor, he saw his colleague walk up to him. She stopped him and said "I have a new one for you. A Malayalee one." She continued, "A Malayalee named Avocado had two sons, one his favourite and the other estranged. Their names Guacamole and Guaca-no-mole." He brought an amused expression on to his face. But before he could say anything, she continued "Later Guaco-no-mole returned. It was a teary reunion. Mushy affair, since he became a Guacamole again." He laughed and said "Good one. Its original. But one correction." She looked at him enquiringly. He continued "It should be two daughters and not two sons. In Malayalam, daughters are referred to as molé and sons as moné." She felt embarrassed and said "Oh really! I thought otherwise." He nodded his head. He thought for a moment and said "That gave me a thought. "What did mom tell me when I tried to grab the avocado that she had bought for the guests?" She shrugged her shoulders and asked "What?" He responded, "Aa avocado, avarcado!" She smiled at him and said "Woah!"

He did not let go of the discussion there. He asked "Have you heard the famous birthday questions?" She said "No, what are they?" He said "I will tell you a few."

"1. If you travel by a sleeper coach on your birthday, what will your birthday become?"

"What?"

"It becomes your berthday."

"2. If you win a lottery on your birthday, what will your birthday become?

"What?"

"It becomes a worthday."

"3. If you run out of money on your birthday, what will your birthday become?

"What?"

"It becomes a dirthday."

"Enough! I gotta go!"

He walked a little ahead and sat on a chair. He watched an ant walking on a ledge for sometime. The ant was one of bigger ones. He let his eyes wander away from the ant and looked down at the floor by the end of ledge. Before he could move his eyes off the spot on the floor, he saw the ant fall at the spot on the floor. It took him a moment to realize that he had never seen an ant fall. He thought they walked on all surface regardless of its orientation to the earth. But this ant fell from an height. It must have reached the end of the ledge and instead of holding on to the sides of the ledge just walked off it and fell. He wished life had a rewind button so that he could go back and see how that happened. Now, he could only guess. He looked down at the ant. It walked around unsteadily as though someone had plonked its head. The behaviour of the ant did not surprise him; it had fallen from height many times its own. Had it been a human, he/she would have been killed instantly. The ant continued to walk unsteadily. It was going around in circle as though it had lost its compass. After a few seconds, he realized it was time for him to get back to his room. He got up and walked away.

As he walked into the room, he found the amusing one recounting an incident. The narration was nearing its end. As he reached the group, the group burst into laughing. They laughed for nearly a minute. He did not know the reason for the laugh and looked at each member of the group. When he ran out of patience, he asked the narrator "Hey, tell me what happened?” A few members of the group egged the narrator “Yes, yes, tell him too". A proud smile appeared on the narrator's face, and he said thus.

"It happened a week back. I reached home late from work and slept only for a few hours. I had that damned status meeting that day. The mornings of the status meeting are always the worst. I mean I hate status meetings. Why do they exist? What is the point of getting to know if something is getting delayed when help can't be provided to get the work done. I mean..." His narration was interrupted by clearing of the hearer's throat. He looked at the hearer and continued "I am digressing. Anyway, I felt groggy that morning. Usually, I get out of the bed as soon as I wake up but, on that day, I stayed on the bed for nearly five minutes. I got up and walked unsteadily to the bathroom. Enroute, I picked the toothpaste from the table. In the bathroom, I picked the toothbrush and placed some paste on it. I gargled water, spit it and started brushing the teeth. Almost immediately I saw that there were two tubes of toothpaste on the counter. I felt worried. I thought the sleeplessness had resulted in double vision. But I realized there was nothing wrong with my vision when I could only see one liquid soap dispenser. I concluded that there were two toothpaste tubes. There was something wrong; I was sure I only had one tube of toothpaste and not two. At that moment, I realized that the toothpaste in my mouth did not taste like my usual toothpaste. Soon, I realized that the toothpaste did not taste like toothpaste at all. I reached out to the new tube of toothpaste and read its label. It was a mosquito repellent cream. I realized then that I had picked the mosquito repellant cream from table besides the bed. I spit out the content of my mouth and washed it away immediately. But the smell of the repellent cream did not subside. Even now my mouth smells of it. Not even the flavours of biriyani reduce the smell. The only advantage is that I no longer have to apply the mosquito repellent every day. The mosquitoes keep away from me.”

As soon as it was revealed that he had used the mosquito repellent cream instead of the toothpaste everyone burst into laughter except for the person for whom the story was narrated second. He smiled and at the end of the narration, he laughed and said, “Not just the mosquitos, even your wife must be keeping away from you.” The group went silent, and everyone looked at him. He looked down at his watch, got up saying “Oh! Its time for the status meeting. Let’s go.”

At the end of the meeting, he heard two of his colleagues speak to each other. 

"I think this meeting requires subtitles. I don't understand half the things being said."

"Even with subtitles I am not sure if I have will understand."

"Yeah! Its like the subtitles I saw in a malayalam movie."

"What was it?"

"I will not explain the situation but at one point in the movie one guy tells another 'Aaru endu thannalum eduthu kaiyil pidicholanam' The subtitle simply said 'Why did you take the gun?' Seriously! The whole essence of the Malayalam line is lost."

"I don't understand Malayalee. Can you translate it in Hindi?"

"Never mind!"

That evening he found himself in a party, not a political party but a get together. He was invited by a friend and he knew no one other than his friend at the party. The party took place around a bonfire. The evening was cold and he found the warmth of the fire welcoming. He sat on a chair besides the fire and watched the burning embers. His friend was talking to a small group of men. They were talking about the roads and traffic in the area. This topic usually interested him but he did not know or care about the area being discussed and so kept away from it. Besides he did not know these men and was not really interested to adding them to list the of people who could come back many months later and ask him "Don't you remember me?" He felt happy to watch the fire and take videos of it in slow motion. The only other point of interest in the party for him was the food. He had seen large covers with 'Meghna' written on them placed on a table close by.  Meghna biriyani was popular and he was looking forward to taste it. His primary intent to attend a party was food. From his point of view, parties should only consist of the following steps.

1. People reach party.

2. Say "hello, how are you to each other?"

3. Eat food.

4. While not chewing the food, talk on topics that don't involve politics, education system, philosophy, dead people, dying people, recipes, … Damn, the list is long. Forget it. Don't talk, just chew food. Maybe listen to music playing on the background. No, no, strike that one off too. Music in the party is never in the background and regardless which party he attended, with or without DJ, the playlist was crap. 

4. (Note: the previous point numbered 4 is struck off and so does not exist though you think it exists. Its Maya, not be misunderstood to be name of a girl or woman. This is the Maya that exists in Philosophy. 

4. Ok! The previous point 4 is not a point at all; it is just a clarification. This point 4 is not a point either. The next one is the actual point 4. 

4. Wash your hands, say goodbye and leave.

Clearly the organizers of the party did not agree with the above-mentioned list. They let the 'Meghna biriyani', stay untouched on the tables and continued talking. Suddenly, the party moved from being uninteresting to being unpleasant. One of the men left the group of men talking about traffic. He walked close to the bonfire and announced in a loud and jolly voice "Come on, come on. Gather around the fire. Its time for games." The word 'games' shocked him. He nearly fell out of the chair into the fire but fortunately for him he held on to the sides of the chair and the bonfire didnot become his funeral pyre. He hated party games. Unfortunately for him, he was in the minority and  everyone gathered around the fire immediately. The man announced "we will start with a quiz. I have a few questions here. The children get the first chance to answer. If they don't answer then the adults can. The children will get a chocolate for the correct answer. Adults don't get anything other than a round of applause." The children seemed to like everything mentioned and shouted "yaaay".  The man asked the questions. Actually, they were riddles. 

He took out his mobile and started looking through reels. None of the questions interested him. The only point that interested him was the Melody chocolates that was being distributed as prize. 

The quiz went on for 30 minutes. At the end of it, the self declared master of ceremony asked "what next?" Someone suggested "passing the parcel". He looked up from the phone shocked. Of all the party games this was the worst. The person with parcel will be asked to do something and this something could be anything but he was only interested in doing nothing. The game was a big problem. The MC asked "so what should people with the parcel do?" One of the kids suggested "dance". Once again he nearly fell out of his chair. Of all the somethings, dancing was the worst. He hated dancing. He never understood human obsession with dancing. He started pushing back his chair in an attempt to move out of the circle when one of the women protested by shouting "no dancing". The other women agreed. He looked at the women with respect in his eyes. Soon the game was dropped. No one knew what was to be done. The MC suggested "housie". He felt relieved. He loved housie aka. bingo. He can be a non participating participant in the game. Unfortunately, the children protested. They already had too many numbers in their lives and wanted none in the party. Finally, someone suggested the most acceptable party game, Dumb Charades. He was not very happy about the game but he knew that people loved the game and so he will never be called to act. 

Controversy struck at the beginning of the game. A few members of the party whose nativity lay in the north side of our country demanded "only Hindi movies". But members from the southern side of the country protested "we don't know Hindi movies". The protest was counter protested with "but we don't know any South movies".  Finally, the MC reached a compromise. "English or Hindi movies only.  Show thumbs up to show English and thumbs down for Hindi".  The teams were then split into two by drawing a diamater of the circle. The resulting teams were gender skewed. One team had women and children and the other team had men and children. The women protested "We don't watch as many movies as all of you."  But they did not hold on to their protest and the game started. The children were the first to come on and act. Movie names were given, the actors acted it out and the guesses took place. Though all the movies were guessed by the two teams, the team with men had the edge. They guessed the movie names faster. The team with women got frustrated and decided to give a really hard name. One of the women, took out a mobile and searched for something. They found a movie that no one had heard. When they said they had the movie name with them, a man walked over and looked at the movie name. He had never heard of the movie either and wondered how to act it. He decided he will just act out each word.

All this while, the odd one out of the party was observing the game. He did not take part in it nor did he guess the names but he observed it like a disinterested member of the audience. For the current movie too, he looked at the man act it is an English movie with five words. The man then acted out the first word by crossing his hands. Everyone else in the team said "No". He got a vague feeling that he knew the movie name but he kept quiet and continued to observe. The man then acted out the fourth word by pointing at an old lady. Everyone else in the team shouted "old". With this guess the vagueness of the movie name disappeared for him. He felt a thrill run through him and he shouted "No country for old men". The man who was acting jumped around in joy, shouting "yes" and gave him a high five. The women in the opposing team were stunned. One of them asked "How do you know this movie?" He responded "I have seen this movie. Its a Coen Brothers movie." She did not care for his comment. She shook her head and walked off. He realized his mistake as he had become a mini-celebrity of one half of the party. He quickly dialed his friend's number on his mobile phone, placed it over his ears and walked away.

My world's changing!

A generation is disappearing; not gradually but quite rapidly. I don't look at it with sadness for my own experiences with life has shown that death is a necessary end to the miseries of life. That statement seems more depressing than intended. I did not mean that life is entirely composed of misery. Life is a mixture of joy and misery. The issue seems to be that the human mind absorbs misery and lets most of the joy pass through it. As the years pass by, the miseries make the mind grimy and this in turn results in the mind absorbing more misery than required. To make matters worse, the body starts degrading and the pain of the degradation adds to the misery. So, death is a welcome end to the misery for the person experiencing it. Death affects the living a lot more than the dead. I mean I don't remember being dead and so I am guessing here.

Damn! I made the whole thing seem even more depressing. What I am attempting to say is that death is not bad. What I am not attempting to say is that old age is miserable. It can be but it need not be. Regardless of the age, life can seem miserable or joyful. It depends on one's own outlook to life. What I am attempting to say is death is essential; the end is necessary. What I am attempting to say is that if you have not understood what I am attempting to say yet then it does not matter.  

I don't have a strong memory, which means that most of the events of the past are lost or are hidden in unreachable locations inside my head. This also means that the memory of my past is made up of people and not events. I feel that when the people in my life disappear, my past also disappears. Today, I feel I am lesser version of myself than I ever was. 

2023 started with the death of an uncle. Since then, I have lost another uncle and my grandmother. In all these cases, the persons involved went through a great amount of physical discomfort during the last days of their lives and everyone believed death was a welcome end to their misery. But, of course, everyone expressed this belief with sadness. Death cannot involve joy. 

"We will visit the aunt's house tomorrow morning," said my aunt. "Which aunt?" asked her brother. "Teacher aunt."

"The one who passed away yesterday?"

"Yes."

He looked at me and said, "You know, her sister was also a teacher". "But she died six months back" added she.

My uncle explained "She was our teacher when we were in first standard." "Mine too," said my aunt. I did not know which of the sisters they were referring to now, but I decided to let it pass. 

The next day, at 10 am, my aunt and I got into an auto. She instructed the auto driver "go to the teacher aunt's house". The auto driver nodded knowingly. I wondered how he was sure which teacher aunt my aunt was referring to. Maybe it is obvious to him that she was referring to the one who passed away recently. My aunt continued instructing the auto driver "we will not be there for long, so wait for us*. The auto driver nodded in agreement. The auto reached the destination in 10 minutes. It stood in front of a single storied beige coloured house. There were two men standing by the gate. I did not know them nor did my aunt. She went past them and walked towards the door. There were two more men standing there. She knew them. She nodded towards them and mentioned a few words of condolence. The two men nodded their heads gravely. I held my lips in the shape of a downward arc in an attempt to express sadness. 

I followed my aunt into the house. She went through the hall towards the dining hall where the women of the house were gathered. I did not follow her. I sat down in one of the seats in the halls. The two men at the door had followed us into the hall. They looked at me. I smiled at them weakly. They responded similarly. I started forming a comment or a question that I could ask them, but I could not think of anything. They turned their heads away and started talking to each other. I could not follow their conversation. So, I took out my phone and started looking through Facebook. 

Soon, my aunt brought out one of the ladies from the dining hall towards me. She was the daughter of Teacher aunt. I looked at her with a sad smile on my face. I wanted to say "my heartfelt condolences" but I was not sure how to say it in Malayalam. So, I stood frozen with a sad smile on my face. Teacher aunt's daughter reciprocated my stance for a few seconds. She, then, introduced me to one of the men in the room. The introduction did not help him. He smiled and asked me to sit. The lady went back to the dining hall. He sat down on a chair besides mine. Both of us remained quiet for a few seconds. He asked, "When did you reach?" I responded, "Yesterday morning". He asked, "When are you leaving?" I responded, "On Monday". He had no further questions. He thought I, now, had the turn to ask questions and waited expectantly. I could not think of anything and so looked back at him blankly. When he realised that I had no plans to ask or say anything, he looked at the table in front of him.  He picked up a telephone book (I am not sure if that is what it is called; prior to arrival of mobile phones, there existed books in which one wrote phone numbers of one's friends, relatives and other contacts, I think the book is called phone book). He started to search for something in the phone book. After a few seconds, he gave up the search and picked a small piece of paper that was lying on the table. He looked at the contents on the paper. He opened the phone book and placed the paper inside it. He did not close the book but continued to look at the paper intently.

At that moment, an elderly gentleman walked into the room. The man dropped the phone book on the table and got up enthusiastically to greet the new entrant. He went to the other side of the room and sat beside the new person. He started saying something but before he could complete the sentence, the teacher aunt's daughter approached him. He got up and uttered words of condolence. She shook her head solemnly and started recounting about the final days of her mother.

"She was very active till the last two weeks. She did all the activities by herself. About a week back, she had difficulty in breathing and her memory became weak too. She was not conscious at all on the last day. All of us were here and she was fortunate to receive her final sips of water from all of us. She passed away at 12:20 in the afternoon. It was a peaceful death."

The man listened to her narration intently and  said, "One has to be lucky to have such a peaceful death. Teacher is very fortunate". The lady agreed "Amma lived and died well. We are all very happy".  He nodded with a smile. They stood silently for a moment before she left the room. 

Soon, another lady approached me holding a tray with two cups of tea. Though I was not interested in drinking the tea, I picked a cup from the tray. The lady went with the remaining cup of tea to the old man. He smiled at her and declined the cup politely. I regretfully looked down at the pale brown coloured liquid in the cup. I brought the cup towards my lips and took a sip of the liquid. It tasted terrible. If the lady had not referred to it as chaya, I would not have identified it as tea. The tea was not hot and so I gulped it down quickly.

During this time, the men had begun discussing about matters related to the death of the teacher.

"Did the cremation go on without an issue?"

"Yes, it went well. Everyone was here for the festival and so could take part in the ceremonies."

"That is good."

"The 15th day function will be held at the common hall."

"Oh! When will the 15th day function be held?"

"On the 22nd."

"Here only, right?"

"No. There is not enough space here.  We will conduct it in the common hall."

"Not here? Then where?"

"Common hall, the common hall".

"Sorry. I did not get my hearing aid. I got out of the house and only then remembered that I did not pick it. I did not want to go back to pick it."

"Oh! Can you hear without the hearing aid?"

"Yes! For both ears. I have been using them for the past three years."

"Oh!"

"It is good you are not conducting the ceremony here. There is not enough space and there are too many vehicles on the road."

"Too many vehicles. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes for me to cross the road and the sound of the vehicles disturbs our sleep in the night."

"It will only get worse."

"True, true. Once the Lulu mall opens, the number of vehicles on this road will increase."

"Oh yes! The Lulu mall! When is it opening?"

"Day after tomorrow."

"After that the number of vehicles plying through the road will increase."

"Certainly."

"Do you need help to get the death certificate?"

"No, we got it."

"You got it?"

"Yes, it is very important."

"That must be the cremation certificate. You should get the death certificate from the Panchayat office immediately. It is a very important document."

"Yes, yes. We have to go to the Panchayat office for rest of the processes."

"No, I no longer go to the Panchayat office. I retired 12 years ago. Now I wake up in the morning, go for a walk and ..."

"You walk around your house?"

"I used to go for the walk before 7 as the roads get crowded after 7 ..."

"Oh! You walk on the roads?"

"... but the other day I felt giddy and nearly fell down. Fortunately, I held on to an electric post. Since then, I walk around my house."

The discussion then moved to the arrangements for the 15th day function. A little later, the person left after promising to attend the ceremony. 

A little later my aunt, came to the hall with a group of ladies. Each of them were introduced. "This is the eldest daughter, this is the second daughter, this is the daugther-in-law and you know her". Sure enough, I knew her. She was my aunt's neighbour and her cousin too. At that point, I remembered that the other Teacher aunt was her mother. She passed away a few months back and she was this Teacher's Aunt's sister. I also remembered that while this Teacher aunt taught many of my uncles, aunts and my father in the first standard, the other Teacher aunt had taught them in higher classes. 

I remembered that my father had mentioned to me about this Teacher's aunts passing away. As per my memory, she was a month short of 100 years when she passed away. I mentioned this to the eldest daughter, who promptly corrected me "No, no! She would have been 99 in a month, that is, she would have been in her 100th year in a month".
